Caorle

Caorle is a versatile town where sea and beach mingle with history and tradition. Situated on the Adriatic Coast between Venice and Trieste, Caorle was founded at least 2000 years ago, according to the historian Trino Bottani (1811) who claimed that the Roman fleet had been stationated there since 238 BC, and the roman remains found in the territory and in the sea testify this fact.
The fishing harbour is situated in the historic centre that has become a pedestrian zone: old houses painted in light pastel colours,lanes and squares, recalling the Venetian Style and creating a magical atmosphere. The Church of the Madonna dell'Angelo,situated on the rocks at sea , record the love of fishing of the seafaring people from Caorle.
Out of all the cities of the Veneto, Caorle, an original Roman settlement, is by far the most picturesque and fascinating. Here culture, art and leisure all meet in one.

Following is a description of the main attractions which tourists can sightsee while staying here.
Cathedral “Santo Stefano” . Originally a Roman church, it is characterised by its refined Byzantine styled structures. On every corner, one can admire various works of art, including the “Pala d’Oro”, a golden pallet which originates from Cyprus.
Bell Tower. Standing majestically next to the Cathedral, is the famous Roman Bell Tower of Caorle. Constructed in 1070, it’s 48 metres high. The Bell Tower is by far the monument which represents Caorle and each summer it is the host of various shows and firework events.
“Scogliera Viva” A main tourist attraction is the wall of rocks along the west coast promenade of Caorle. Visitors can admire magnificent works of art which have been sculptured into these granite rocks. Each July new works of art are added by great national and international artists who carve away for three days. This is known at the “Scogliera Viva” and it’s by far one of the most popular events as one can literally see plain rocks came alive into magnificent sculptures.
“Madonna dell’Angelo” This small church is situated along the promenade and has been overlooking the Adriatic sea for centuries. Known as the fishermen’s church, it hosts their patron Virgin Mary of Caorle, the “Madonna dell’Angelo”. Full of stories and legends it is definitely worth a visit. The locals of Caorle are devoted to their “Madonna” and organise a magnificent religious event every five years to celebrate and honour her.
Historical Town Centre “Rio Terra” Where there were once canals that streamed along the centre and between the buildings, there are now small path ways “calli” that are full of life. The town centre is characterised of colourful buildings and small squares that remind visitors of the Venetian influence on this town. Along these bright narrow streets, tourists can enjoy going shopping, stopping at the various pubs and winebars and just walking along enjoying a tasty Italian icecream.
Beach The main tourist attraction in Caorle are the wonderful long sandy beaches. These are divided between the “Ponente” side and the “Levante” one. It is over 15km long and offers both private and free beaches. In these beaches tourists can enjoy swimming in a clean, warm sea, relax and sunbathe. It is also ideal for families as certain areas of the beach offer children’s animation and entertainment.

Caorle lagoon: this is a natural oasis of rare beauty, that without a doubt must be visited. We recommend a trip a trip on the “bragosso” which is a characteristic venetian wooden boat. Departures are daily and not far from our hotel..

Vallevecchia (www.vallevecchia.it) : A wild nature resort which is even recognised by the European Community as a natural protected area. It is possible to rent bicycles and go on a trip to this area rich in fauna and flora. It is situated at only 30km by land or it can also be reached by sea.

VENICE: It is only 60Km from Caorle and can be reached by land or sea. From the information office you can buy a return ticket . This price includes the trip from Caorle to Punta Sabbioni by bus, and from Punta Sabbioni to Venice by ferry. For those who prefer to drive, we recommend to to Mestre and leave your car at car park near the train starion then catch the train from Mestre to Venezia Santa Lucia. Another option is to catch the “Motonave Caorle” ( www.motonavecaorle.com ) that departs from the fishing port in Caorle and will take you directly close to Saint Mar’s Square.

PADOVA: The city of San Antonio. Famous for its university, its amazing frescos by Giotto and for having the largest square in Europe, Prato della Valle. At 100 km from Caorle, it can easily be reached by motorway A4 towards Milan.

VERONA: The romantic city of Romeo & Juliet, a must for all those who are in love. Amongst its many attractions you are able to visit the famous arena where every year well known opera shows take place. It is 180km far from Caorle and it can be reached by following the A4 Motorway towards Milan.

VICENZA: The city of the Palladio and the famous Venetian Villas. It has a small historic centre but full but full of interesting monuments in particular the Olympic Theatre and the beautiful “Santuario della Madonna di Monte Berico”. It is around 130km from Caorle and it can be reached by following the A4 Motorway towards Milan.

CONCORDIA SAGITTARIA: This is an old roman town that used to be known once as “Julia Concordia”. This is where the old roman army arrows used to be made. You can visit the old “Basilica “ and many other roman remains. At only 20km away from Caorle it is reachable following the local road 59, towards San Stino di Livenza and then continuing towards Portogruaro, which is a mediaeval city that is worth a visit.
